J.D. Power ChromeData alternatives

Last updated:

Alternatives to J.D. Power ChromeData for VIN descriptions and vehicle specification data, led by Cardog, with every vendor claim linked to its own page.

Cardog is the alternative to J.D. Power ChromeData built for Canadian vehicles. We decode 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level, serve spec sheets with units and Canadian prices in CAD, list Transport Canada and NHTSA recalls for the same VIN, and publish self-serve pricing from US$30 a month with a free plan. Other VIN description and specification providers are listed below with what their own pages say.

This page is written by Cardog, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another company links to that company's own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-27. Every Cardog claim is something our API serves today.

About ChromeData

ChromeData is a J.D. Power product line. The ChromeData VIN Descriptions Service (CVD) is a RESTful service: GET /vin returns descriptive vehicle content, focused on features, packages, tech specs and other attributes, and PUT /vin returns the same content with filters for a more specific description (CVD). The API portal says "You will need an active account to access this API Portal," and accounts are set up through ChromeData support (API portal). No prices are published on those pages.

Cardog

Cardog is a vehicle data API from a Canadian company, built for Canadian vehicles first.

  • Canadian VINs to trim. GET /v2/vin/{vin} decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level. See Decode a Canadian VIN.
  • Spec sheets with units. GET /v2/specs/{nano} states every number with its unit and lists Canadian and US prices apart, in CAD and USD. See Units.
  • Transport Canada and NHTSA recalls. GET /v2/vin/{vin}/recalls lists both authorities' campaigns for the VIN's model year, each tagged tc or nhtsa. See Recalls.
  • Canadian listings and market quotes. Listing search with prices in CAD and radius in kilometres, and model-year market quotes, keyed to the same refs as the decode.
  • Published, self-serve pricing. 2 credits per VIN looked up and 1 per spec sheet. Sign up, get a key, and start on the Free plan with no card.
  • Clients and agents. TypeScript and Python SDKs, a remote MCP server at mcp.cardog.io, and a dated Cardog-Version header, with each version served for 12 months after the next one lands.

DataOne Software

Extended Vehicle Data covers "light-duty and passenger vehicles destined for the U.S. and Canadian markets," with standard and optional equipment, technical specifications, new vehicle warranty, powertrain and colour modules. It is delivered as a flat file over SFTP with daily updates, or through a REST API that "supports both XML and JSON" (Extended Vehicle Data). Pricing is a custom quote (FAQ).

Mobility Global VINtelligence

VINtelligence is the VIN decoder from S&P Global Mobility (datasheet), now the independent public company Mobility Global Inc. (S&P Global release). Its 2022 datasheet lists Base, Standard, Plus and Deluxe packages, weekly data updates, and hosted or deployed delivery, with a phone number for sales (datasheet).

VinAudit

A VIN decoder that "covers most makes and models across the U.S. and Canada" for standard 17-character VINs, in JSON or XML. Self-Service is $100 a month plus $0.10 a query; Enterprise is by contact (product page).

MarketCheck NeoVIN

MarketCheck's enhanced decoder returns installed options with code, MSRP and a confidence score, option packages, colours with codes and several MSRP fields (NeoVIN). NeoVIN is $0.08 a call, on plans from Basic at $299 a month plus data fees (pricing).

Where Cardog fits

Cardog is the vehicle API for teams whose vehicles are Canadian. The decode names the vehicle down to trim, and its build key opens a spec sheet in metric units with Canadian prices in CAD. The same refs lead to Transport Canada and NHTSA recalls, Canadian listings and market quotes. Prices are published: start on the Free plan, then move to a paid plan from US$30 a month. See Pricing and the docs.
