How to do a lien check in Canada
Last updated:
How a Canadian used-car buyer checks for a lien: each province's personal property registry by VIN, with fees for Ontario, BC, Quebec and the Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba routes.
Before you check for a lien, check the car itself for free on Cardog: paste the VIN into cardog.app/vin to confirm the year, make, model and trim, read its recalls and see what comparable cars ask in Canada. Then search that VIN in the personal property registry of the province where the car is registered. Ontario's online search costs $8, a BC search by registry staff costs $10, and a Quebec RDPRM search by VIN costs $5.00. In Alberta, a registry agent runs the search; in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, SGI and MPI name the registry to use. A car may have liens in more than one province, so search each province it was registered in.
Written by Cardog, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another organization links to its own public page, checked on 2026-10-27.
What a lien is
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says: "A car lien is a lender's claim for repayment that they register against a car or other type of motor vehicle." It says a lien must be removed before the car can be registered in your name, that a car may have liens in more than one province or territory, and that you need the VIN to search (FCAC).
Where to search, by province
| Province | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | Access Now, the Personal Property Security Registration system (ontario.ca) | $8 online |
| British Columbia | Personal Property Registry, in person at Service BC or by mail (BC) | $10 |
| Alberta | Personal property lien search at a registry agent (Alberta) | Not stated |
| Saskatchewan | Information Services Corporation, named by SGI (SGI) | Not stated |
| Manitoba | Property Registry (Teranet Manitoba), named by MPI (MPI) | Not stated |
| Quebec | RDPRM, search by vehicle identification number (RDPRM) | $5.00 |
Ontario
ServiceOntario says: "Before buying a used car or other used goods, you should do a search on Access Now to protect yourself financially." If a search shows a loan, you can contact the lender to confirm whether it is still in effect. If it has been repaid, the buyer "should insist that the seller require the lender to promptly register a discharge before the sale is completed." An online search costs $8 (ontario.ca).
The Used Vehicle Information Package a private seller must give you also carries lien information, and costs $20 if you buy it yourself (ontario.ca). The Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario offers Ontario lien searches "available only to Members," and lien searches for other provinces and territories (UCDA).
British Columbia
BC Registry Services says to make sure personal property has no liens registered against it before you buy it privately. The public can search in person at a Service BC location or by mail with a $10.00 cheque or money order. Online search "is designated for professionals" with a premium account and "is not available to the general public at this time" (BC Registry Services).
Alberta
Alberta's Vehicle Information Report shows the number of liens registered in Alberta against the vehicle, and for detail "you may purchase a search of the Personal Property Registry from the registry agent" (Alberta). For a private sale, Alberta says to "Get a personal property lien search from a registry agent, based on the vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)" (Alberta).
Saskatchewan and Manitoba
SGI says: "To check for liens against the vehicle visit the Information Services Corporation (ISC) website or contact ISC at 1-866-275-4721" (SGI). MPI says to check "if anyone else, other than the legal owner, has a financial interest in the vehicle," through the Property Registry (Teranet Manitoba), by phone, email, mail or online (MPI).
Quebec
The SAAQ says to check the RDPRM before buying "to make sure it is free of debt," because "If you buy a vehicle that has not been paid for in full, it can be seized by the creditor" (SAAQ). An RDPRM search by vehicle identification number costs $5.00 (RDPRM).
Lien records in a history report
Carfax Canada says its Vehicle History Report records can show "damage incidents, open recalls, service history, registration status, and liens" (Carfax Canada).
