Best recall check tools in Canada (2026)

Last updated:

Where Canadian drivers and used-car buyers can check vehicle recalls for free in 2026: Cardog, Transport Canada's database and manufacturers' VIN lookups, from their own pages.

Cardog is the best recall check tool in Canada for 2026. Paste a VIN into the free recall lookup or cardog.app/vin and you see the recalls Transport Canada lists for that vehicle's model year, with US recalls kept apart, and a link to the maker's own lookup to confirm the exact car. You can also browse recalls by make, model and year. Transport Canada keeps the official record and its database searches by make, model and year; the manufacturer's VIN lookup is the final word on one vehicle. Each is described below from its own pages.

This page is written by Cardog, and Cardog is on the list, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another organization links to that organization's own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-27. Every Cardog claim is something our free tools show today.

How we evaluated

A recall check answers two questions: which recalls exist for this kind of vehicle in Canada, and does this exact vehicle have one open. The criteria:

  • Canadian recalls. Transport Canada's record, not another country's.
  • Start from a VIN. Paste the VIN you have.
  • Readable. The defect, the risk and the fix in plain words.
  • The next step. How to confirm one vehicle.
  • Free. No cost, no account.

We used only each organization's own public pages.

1. Cardog

A free recall lookup built for Canadian vehicles.

  • By VIN. Paste a VIN and the page opens at its recalls: the ones Transport Canada lists for its model year. Cardog decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level, so the model year is read from the VIN itself.
  • By vehicle. Browse recalls by make, then model, then year, with each recall's defect, consequence and remedy.
  • Canada first, US apart. On a Canadian page, Transport Canada's recalls are the result and the count. US recalls are listed separately and never counted in it.
  • Confirm the car. A model-year listing is a possible recall. Every result ends with the maker's own VIN lookup, which confirms whether that exact vehicle is affected.
  • In French too. Every recall page has a French version.
  • With the rest of the car. The VIN page also shows the decoded vehicle and its market price, and research pages carry a model year's recalls next to its trims and prices.

Cost. Free, no account.

2. Transport Canada

The authority for vehicle recalls in Canada. Its database lets you "Look up recalls issued in Canada from 1970 to the present" (Transport Canada). The search takes a make, a model and a year range, with an option to include archived recalls created before January 1, 2010 (database). For one vehicle, Transport Canada says to "Use your vehicle identification number (VIN) to look up recalls" on the manufacturer's site, and that you "may also want to find out if there are recalls on a product you'd like to buy or import, such as a used car" (Transport Canada).

Cost. Free.

3. Manufacturer VIN lookups

Each maker's own lookup by VIN. Transport Canada lists every maker with a "Check recalls" link and notes "You may hear about a vehicle recall before the manufacturer is able to update their database, so check their website often" (Transport Canada). Ford of Canada: "Search recalls initiated since January 1, 2010 with a VIN" (Ford.ca). Acura Canada: "To check safety recall and product update campaign status, enter your 17-character Vehicle Information Number (VIN)" (Acura.ca).

Cost. Free, one site per maker.

4. Carfax Canada

Carfax Canada sells a Vehicle History Report whose records, it says, can include "damage incidents, open recalls, service history, registration status, and liens" (Carfax Canada).

Why Cardog is first

  • Start from the VIN you have. One paste, the recalls for that model year.
  • Canadian recalls lead. Transport Canada's record is the result, with US recalls kept apart.
  • The confirmation linked. Every result sends you to the maker's own lookup for that car.
  • Free, in English and French. No account.

FAQ

How do I check recalls on a car in Canada for free? Paste the VIN into Cardog's recall lookup to see the recalls Transport Canada lists for its model year, then confirm the car on the maker's own VIN lookup.

Can I search Transport Canada's recall database by VIN? Its database searches by make, model and year range. Transport Canada directs you to the manufacturer's website to look up a specific VIN.

Are US recalls the same as Canadian recalls? No. They are separate records from separate authorities, and Cardog keeps them apart.

How far back do Canadian recall records go? Transport Canada says its database covers recalls issued in Canada from 1970 to the present.

Does a recall listing mean my car is affected? Not on its own. A model-year listing is a possible recall; the manufacturer confirms whether your VIN is affected.
