Canadian Black Book alternatives

Last updated:

Alternatives to Canadian Black Book's consumer car value tool, led by Cardog's free market quote, with AutoTrader.ca and CarGurus valuations, from each one's own pages.

Cardog is the free alternative to Canadian Black Book for seeing what a car is worth on the Canadian market today. Open the market quote for any make, model and year, or paste a VIN into cardog.app/vin, and you see the median asking price, the middle half of asks and the lowest ask for comparable cars listed in Canada, in CAD, with the number of live listings behind them. No account, no email. AutoTrader.ca and CarGurus valuations are described below from their own pages.

This page is written by Cardog, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another company links to that company's own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-27. Every Cardog claim is something our free tools show today.

Cardog

Cardog prices cars from what is listed for sale in Canada right now.

  • A range, not a single number. The market quote shows the median ask, the middle half of asks and the lowest ask, so you can see where a car sits.
  • The count behind it. Every quote says how many live listings set it. Where too few comparable cars are listed, the page says so.
  • By VIN or by model. Paste a VIN into cardog.app/vin for that car's quote next to its own asking price, or search any make, model and year in the market quote.
  • Price history. The market quote charts how prices have moved over time.
  • The rest of the picture. Each VIN page also decodes the car to trim (Cardog decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level) and lists the recalls Transport Canada has for the model year. Research any model year for its trims and MSRP.

AutoTrader.ca

AutoTrader.ca's free valuation takes a VIN or make and model, plus trim, mileage and postal code, and says "Our suggested price is based on live market data from listings just like yours." It supports "mainstream vehicles manufactured in the year 2000 or later," needs no account, and does not consider add-on options, usage history, accidents and claims or general condition (valuations). See AutoTrader.ca alternatives.

CarGurus

CarGurus Canada offers "Check your car's value instantly" and connects sellers with dealers (CarGurus). Its price trends page lets you "Select a date range and car type to see how prices have changed over the past year" and names its valuation tool "CarGurus Instant Market Value" (price trends). See CarGurus Canada alternatives.

What Canadian Black Book offers consumers

Canadian Black Book says "We provide trade-in values to consumers without the need to create an account," and "Our trade in widget for consumers only covers the most recent 13 model years"; it does not value vehicles by phone (FAQ). Its trade-in values are "calculated using a variety of factors," listed as make and model, year, trim, mileage, condition, optional equipment and local market conditions (trade-in values). The consumer tool is on its Value Your Vehicle page.

FAQ

What is a free alternative to Canadian Black Book? Cardog's market quote is free and shows the median, middle half and lowest asking price for comparable cars listed in Canada, with no account.

Is an asking price the same as a trade-in value? No. An asking price is what a seller lists a car for; a trade-in value is what a dealer offers to pay for it.

Can I see a value for a specific car by VIN? Yes. Paste the VIN into cardog.app/vin to see the market quote for comparable cars next to that car's own asking price.

Which model years does Canadian Black Book's consumer tool cover? Its FAQ says the consumer trade-in widget covers the most recent 13 model years.
