Facebook Marketplace cars alternatives

Alternatives to Facebook Marketplace for buying a used car in Canada, led by Cardog's free listings, VIN pages and market prices, with Kijiji and AutoTrader.ca from their own pages.

Cardog is the alternative to Facebook Marketplace for cars that tells you what a car is and what it should cost before you message the seller. Browse listings from dealers across Canada in CAD, or paste the VIN of any car you found, on Marketplace or anywhere else, into cardog.app/vin to see what it is down to trim, the recalls Transport Canada lists for its model year and what comparable cars are asking. It is free and needs no account. Kijiji and AutoTrader.ca also carry private and dealer listings, and each is described below from its own pages.

This page is written by Cardog, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another company or public service links to its own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-27. Every Cardog claim is something our free tools show today.

Cardog

Cardog is a free research and shopping site for Canadian cars, built around the VIN.

  • Any car, from any seller. Ask the seller for the VIN and paste it into cardog.app/vin: year, make, model and trim, and the check digit. Cardog decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level.
  • A mistyped VIN shows. For a North American VIN, Cardog checks position 9 against the other sixteen characters. If it does not match, the page says so, because a character is likely wrong.
  • What it should cost. Where enough comparable cars are listed, the VIN page shows the median asking price, the middle half of asks and the lowest ask in Canada, with the number of live listings behind them. The market quote gives the full range for any make, model and year.
  • Recalls for the model year. Each VIN page lists the recalls Transport Canada has for that model year, and points you to the maker's own lookup to confirm this car.
  • Dealer listings too. Browse cars from dealers across Canada, priced in CAD.

Kijiji

Kijiji's Cars & Vehicles section carries dealer and private listings, under the title "Free Local Classifieds" (Cars & Vehicles). Its Price Analysis labels a listing "Great price," "Good price," "Fair price" or "Higher price" against an estimated market value (Price Analysis). See Kijiji Autos alternatives.

AutoTrader.ca

AutoTrader.ca lists new, used and certified pre-owned cars and lets private sellers list with "Free to list" (AutoTrader.ca). See AutoTrader.ca alternatives.

What Facebook Marketplace says

Marketplace has a Vehicles category that asks you to "Enter your city to show local results" (Marketplace Vehicles). Meta's help centre says "Meta does not offer refunds for any person-to-person or offsite transactions," and lists "People asking you to move your conversation off Facebook" among signs of a scam (Avoiding scams). It also notes that "products sold on Facebook must follow our Commerce Policies" (Shopping Safety).

Before you pay a private seller

  1. Get the VIN and check it matches. Compare the VIN in the ad with the dashboard, the driver's door jamb sticker and the seller's registration.
  2. Open it on Cardog. Paste it into cardog.app/vin. Confirm the year, make, model and trim match the ad, and compare the price with the market.
  3. Read the recalls. Check the recalls for the model year, then confirm open ones on the maker's own lookup.
  4. Search CPIC. The police stolen vehicle search takes a VIN; a positive result means "please contact your local police to confirm the information and ask for assistance" (CPIC).
  5. Get your province's paperwork. In Ontario, "The seller is legally required to provide a used vehicle information package (UVIP) to a buyer" (Ontario). For other provinces, see British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta.
