Carfax Canada alternatives

Alternatives to a Carfax Canada report for Canadian used-car buyers: Cardog's free VIN decode, recalls and price, then provincial history records, lien registries and UCDA searches.
The free alternative to start with is Cardog. Paste the VIN into cardog.app/vin and you get, at no cost and with no account, the decoded vehicle down to trim, the recalls Transport Canada lists for its model year, and what comparable cars are asking in Canada, in CAD. Add the maker's own recall lookup and the police stolen vehicle search, both free. For the accident, lien and ownership record, Carfax Canada is one source of several. Each province keeps part of the record: Ontario's Used Vehicle Information Package, ICBC's claims report in BC, Alberta's Vehicle Information Report, SGI's free Saskatchewan VIN search and the SAAQ's ownership history in Quebec. The Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario offers lien, ownership and accident searches, and VinAudit Canada sells a national report.
This page is written by Cardog, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another company links to that company's own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-27. Every Cardog claim is something our free tools show today.

Cardog
Cardog is a free vehicle research site built for Canadian cars. Every tool below opens without an account.
- The VIN, decoded. cardog.app/vin reads any 17-character VIN in its parts and names the vehicle. Cardog decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level.
- The check digit. For a North American VIN, Cardog checks position 9 against the other sixteen characters. If it does not match, the page says so and shows nothing, because a character is likely mistyped.
- Recalls for the model year. Each VIN page lists the recalls Transport Canada has for that model year. US recalls are kept apart and never counted in the Canadian total. The page then points you to the maker's own VIN lookup to confirm this exact car.
- What it should cost. Where enough comparable cars are listed, each VIN page shows the median asking price, the middle half of asking prices and the lowest ask for those cars in Canada, with the number of live listings behind them. Open the market quote for the full range and its history.
- What else is for sale. Browse listings from dealers across Canada, priced in CAD, or research a model year with its trims, prices and recalls.
- A record you can keep. Every VIN page prints, and saves as a PDF.
Transport Canada and the maker's lookup
Transport Canada keeps the recall record for Canada and lets you "Look up recalls issued in Canada from 1970 to the present." For one specific vehicle, it says to "Use your vehicle identification number (VIN) to look up recalls" on the manufacturer's site (Transport Canada). Its list of manufacturers links each maker's "Check recalls" page (Transport Canada). Cardog's recall pages link the same lookup for the make you are reading.
CPIC stolen vehicle search
The Canadian Police Information Centre website is managed by the RCMP "on behalf of the Canadian law enforcement community" (About CPIC). Its public search takes a VIN for "autos, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, farm vehicles, heavy equipment, trailers, or ATVs." A positive result means: "please contact your local police to confirm the information and ask for assistance" (CPIC vehicle search).
Where to get the accident, lien and ownership record
Each province keeps its own part of a car's record. The full guide, with each province's lien registry, is How to check a used car's history in Canada.
- Ontario. A private seller is required to give the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package. It lists "all present and previous owners, their city of residence and odometer reading," lien information, and whether the car is registered as unfit or reported as wrecked. It costs $20 (ontario.ca).
- British Columbia. ICBC's vehicle claims history report covers damage claimed through ICBC, at $20.00 plus GST. ICBC says "ICBC reports provide claims information from B.C." (ICBC).
- Alberta. Anyone can request a Vehicle Information Report. It shows the vehicle's status, such as rebuilt or salvage, its odometer reading, its registration history and the number of liens registered in Alberta (Alberta).
- Saskatchewan. "The Saskatchewan VIN search is free to use." It shows Saskatchewan damage claims since Nov. 1, 2002 (SGI). SGI's Cross-Canada VIN search checks status in all Canadian jurisdictions for $20 (SGI).
- Manitoba. MPI will check by phone whether a vehicle was ever an Autopac write-off in Manitoba (MPI).
- Quebec. The SAAQ's ownership history shows whether a vehicle "has been rebuilt," its mechanical inspections, how many people have owned it and how it was used. "Fees apply" (SAAQ).
UCDA vehicle searches
The Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario lists four searches. Ontario lien searches are "available only to Members," and lien searches for other provinces and territories are offered. History Search is to "Search ownership history for vehicles in Ontario." UCDA describes Auto Check as "The lowest cost accident report available." The Power Pack bundles an Ontario lien, history and Auto Check search "for 20% off the price of individual searches." The page lists no prices (UCDA). The ordering site says "This area is restricted to members only" and gives the UCDA office phone line for non-members (ucdasearches.com).
VinAudit Canada
VinAudit Canada sells a Canadian vehicle history report by VIN. Its page lists title brands such as salvage or rebuilt, registration history, mileage history, theft records and recalls (VinAudit Canada).
Ontario's Authorized Requester Program
Ontario's Ministry of Transportation runs the Authorized Requester Program. It "allows eligible organizations to apply to become authorized requesters who can purchase driver and vehicle information" for specific purposes, and there are "about 3,000 authorized requesters" (ontario.ca). Ontario publishes the current list as open data (Ontario Data Catalogue).
Carfax Canada
Carfax Canada sells a Vehicle History Report. Its own page says the records in each report "can reveal critical information about a car's history such as damage incidents, open recalls, service history, registration status, and liens." It also says the report "is based only on information supplied by participating data sources," and that Carfax Canada "recommends taking a test drive and getting a vehicle inspection along with a vehicle history report when buying used" (Carfax Canada).
A free first pass, in order
- Read the VIN off the car. Check the dashboard through the windshield and the driver's door jamb sticker, and make sure both match the registration.
- Open it on Cardog. Paste it into cardog.app/vin. Confirm the year, make, model and trim match the car in front of you.
- Check the recalls. Read the recalls listed on the VIN page, then confirm open ones with the maker's lookup.
- Search CPIC. Run the VIN through the police stolen vehicle search.
- Price it. Compare the asking price with the median and middle half on the VIN page, or open the market quote.
- Get the record. For the car's accident, lien or ownership record, use the province's record for where it was registered, or a national report.
