Best VIN decoder APIs (2026)

Last updated:

Eight VIN decoder APIs compared on Canadian coverage, data depth, published pricing, free tiers, auth, batch and agent support, with every vendor claim linked.

Cardog is first on this list. It decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level, takes up to 1,000 VINs in one batch request, gives a named reason for every VIN it cannot name, and returns keys that join each decode to Transport Canada and NHTSA recalls, spec sheets with units, market quotes and listings. The other decoders on the list are NHTSA vPIC, CarsXE, VinAudit, Auto.dev, MarketCheck NeoVIN, DataOne Software and Vehicle Databases; each is summarized below from its own public pages.

This page is written by Cardog, and Cardog is on the list, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another company links to that company's own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-26. Every Cardog claim is something our API serves today.

How we evaluated

We looked at each decoder as a developer building for Canada first and the US second. The criteria:

  • Canadian coverage. Does the vendor say, on its own pages, that it decodes Canadian-market VINs?
  • Data depth. Identity only, or trim, equipment, colours, options and prices too?
  • Pricing transparency. Is there a published price, with a currency, or is it quote only?
  • Free tier. Can you test without a card?
  • Auth. Is the key sent in a header or in the URL?
  • Batch. Can you send many VINs in one request?
  • Docs, SDKs and MCP. Public docs, client libraries, and a server an AI agent can call.

We only used each vendor's own public pages. We did not sign up for paid accounts or run test VINs through other vendors' APIs, so where a page is silent we say so instead of guessing.

1. Cardog

A vehicle data API built in Canada for Canadian and US vehicles. GET /v2/vin/{vin} returns year, make, model and trim; refs for the make, model, model year, body style, fuel, drive, transmission, vehicle type, GVWR and plant country; build keys (nano, squish); and an attribute map where every value can carry its unit.

  • Canadian VINs to trim. 99.77% of Canadian VINs decode to trim level. See Decode a Canadian VIN.
  • Batch. POST /v2/vin/batch takes up to 1,000 VINs, and one bad VIN fails only its own row.
  • A reason for every miss. A VIN that cannot be named comes back valid: false with a named code such as UNSEEN_BUILD.
  • Join keys. Refs and build keys tie the decode to recalls, spec sheets, market quotes and listings, with no matching on name strings.
  • Spec sheets with units. GET /v2/specs/{nano} gives every number with its unit, keeps the source's own published number, and lists Canadian prices in CAD and US prices in USD, never merged. See Units.
  • Built for developers and agents. API key in x-api-key or Authorization: Bearer, TypeScript (@cardog/api) and Python (cardog) SDKs, a remote MCP server at mcp.cardog.io with six read tools, and a dated Cardog-Version header with each version served for 12 months after the next one lands.

Pricing. A single GET /v2/vin/{vin} bills 2 credits on any 200 answer, including valid: false. A batch bills 2 credits only for rows that come back valid: true. A 400 costs nothing. The Free plan is 50 credits a month with no card and a hard stop; paid plans start at US$30 a month. See Pricing.

2. NHTSA vPIC

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public decoder, a separate government product. Its data is "populated using the information submitted by the Motor Vehicle manufacturers through the 565 submittals" (vPIC API). It serves XML, CSV and JSON, takes up to 50 VINs in a batch call, applies "an automated traffic rate control mechanism," and offers standalone databases for download (vPIC API).

Pricing and status. No price stated on the API page (vPIC API). US government service.

3. CarsXE

A vehicle data API whose /specs call returns identity, equipment flags, colours and warranties. US VINs return the full attribute set, and "Non-US VINs automatically fall back to the international decoder, which returns a smaller set of fields." The key is a key query parameter (Specifications). A hosted MCP server at mcp.carsxe.com lists 12 tools (MCP).

Pricing and status. Sandbox at $0 with up to 100 API calls lifetime. Starter at US$40.83 and Pro at US$207.50 a month, billed annually, with 2,000 and 25,000 specification calls a month. Business is "Contact Us" (pricing).

4. VinAudit

A decoder at /v3/specifications with an include parameter for attributes, equipment, colours, recalls, warranties and photos; the key is a key parameter (docs). Its product page says it "covers most makes and models across the U.S. and Canada" for standard 17-character VINs, with responses "in JSON or XML formats" (product page).

Pricing and status. Trial free with up to 100 queries; Self-Service at $100 a month plus $0.10 a query; Enterprise on contact (product page).

5. Auto.dev

A developer API whose decoder handles "North America, Europe, Asia, and other global markets." When a VIN matches several styles, it lists candidate trims and styles with a confidence, and a 207 partial answer is not billed (VIN Decode). It accepts Authorization: Bearer or an apiKey query parameter (Getting Started) and runs a hosted MCP server at mcp.auto.dev (MCP quickstart).

Pricing and status. Free: 1,000 calls a month across VIN decode, listings and photos, with no overage charge. Growth at US$299 a month plus US$0.0025 per decode; Scale at US$599 plus US$0.0015; Enterprise custom, with batch processing listed there (pricing).

6. MarketCheck NeoVIN

MarketCheck's enhanced decoder at /v2/decode/car/neovin/{vin}/specs. It returns installed options with code, MSRP and a confidence score, options packages, colours with codes, and several MSRP fields; the key is an api_key query parameter unless you use OAuth (NeoVIN). A Batch API runs NeoVIN decodes from a CSV file (Batch API).

Pricing and status. NeoVIN is $0.08 a call and the Basic VIN Decoder $0.0015 a call, on top of plans from Basic at $299 a month plus data fees. Free is 500 calls a month (pricing).

7. DataOne Software

A commercial VIN decoder over "a REST-based HTTPS interface," returning vehicle descriptors, installed and optional equipment, technical specifications, factory warranties, original vehicle and option pricing, OEM colours and stock images. It also "Supports VIN-less decoding" (product page).

Pricing and status. "Request a Quote," with a "Request a No-Obligation API Trial" (product page). Sales-led.

8. Vehicle Databases

A catalogue of vehicle APIs, including a VIN decoder with region-specific endpoints for the US, Canada and Europe. It says you can "decode US and Canada VINs using two different tiers," for VINs from 1980 to the present (VIN Decoder).

Pricing and status. "Pay as you go, monthly, and yearly subscription plans"; a trial gives "15 free credits" and an API key (home).

Why Cardog is first

  • Canada is the starting point. 99.77% of Canadian VINs decode to trim level, and refs carry the plant country.
  • Bulk without surprises. Up to 1,000 VINs a request, one bad VIN fails only its own row, and a batch bills only the rows that come back valid.
  • Every miss is explained. valid: false comes with a named reason code.
  • The decode is a key, not a dead end. The same refs and build keys open Transport Canada and NHTSA recalls, spec sheets with units, market quotes and Canadian listings.
  • Stable for the long run. A dated Cardog-Version header, typed SDKs in TypeScript and Python, and a remote MCP server for agents.

FAQ

Which VIN decoder covers Canadian vehicles? Cardog decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level. VinAudit and Vehicle Databases also mention Canada on their own pages. Test a sample of your own VINs before you commit.

What does a Cardog decode cost? Two credits per VIN. A single GET /v2/vin/{vin} bills 2 credits on any 200 answer, including valid: false; a batch bills only the rows that come back valid: true; a 400 costs nothing.

How many VINs can I decode in one Cardog request? Up to 1,000 with POST /v2/vin/batch. Each row stands on its own, so one bad VIN does not fail the batch.

Can an AI agent use Cardog? Yes. The remote MCP server at mcp.cardog.io exposes six read tools, including VIN identification and recall checks. See MCP server.

What comes after the decode? The refs and build keys in the response lead straight to recalls, spec sheets, market quotes and listings for the same vehicle. See VIN decode.
