Best free VIN check in Canada (2026)
Last updated:
The free VIN checks a Canadian used-car buyer can run in 2026: Cardog's VIN decode, recalls and market price, manufacturer recall lookups, the CPIC stolen search and SGI's Saskatchewan VIN search.
Cardog is the best free VIN check in Canada for 2026. Paste a VIN into cardog.app/vin and, with no account, you get the vehicle decoded down to trim, a check-digit test, the recalls Transport Canada lists for its model year, and the median and middle-half asking prices of comparable cars in Canada, in CAD. Two more free checks complete the picture: the manufacturer's own recall lookup for that exact VIN, and the CPIC stolen vehicle search. For a car registered in Saskatchewan, SGI's VIN search shows its damage claims in the province, free. For the accident, lien and ownership record elsewhere, go to the province: Ontario's Used Vehicle Information Package, ICBC in BC, Alberta's Vehicle Information Report or the SAAQ in Quebec, or a national report.
This page is written by Cardog, and Cardog is on the list, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another organization links to that organization's own public page, and we checked those pages on 2026-10-27. Every Cardog claim is something our free tools show today.
How we evaluated
A free VIN check for a Canadian buyer should answer, at no cost:
- Is the VIN real and typed right? A check digit test.
- What is the vehicle? Year, make, model and trim, so you can match it to the ad.
- Does it have recalls? For Canada, by VIN.
- Is it reported stolen? A police record search.
- What is it worth? The Canadian market, in CAD.
- What does it cost to use? Free, with or without an account.
We used only each organization's own public pages and did not run paid accounts.

1. Cardog
A free VIN page for every vehicle, built for Canadian cars.
- Decode to trim. Cardog decodes 99.77% of Canadian VINs to trim level, and shows the VIN in its parts: maker, descriptor, check digit, model year, plant and serial.
- Check digit. For a North American VIN, Cardog tests position 9 against the other sixteen characters as you type. A VIN that fails is never opened, and the page says a character is likely mistyped.
- Recalls. The recalls Transport Canada lists for the model year, with US recalls kept apart and never counted in the Canadian total, and a link to the maker's lookup to confirm the car. The recall lookup also searches by make, model and year.
- Market price. Where enough comparable cars are listed, the median asking price, the middle half of asks and the lowest ask in Canada, with the live listing count. The market quote has the full range and its history.
- Print or save. Each VIN page prints and saves as a PDF.
Cost. Free, no account.
2. Manufacturer recall lookups
Transport Canada says to "Use your vehicle identification number (VIN) to look up recalls" on the manufacturer's website (Transport Canada). Its list of manufacturers says it can be used to "Look up existing vehicle manufacturer recalls using a vehicle identification number (VIN)," and warns: "You may hear about a vehicle recall before the manufacturer is able to update their database, so check their website often" (Transport Canada). Two examples: Ford of Canada says "Search recalls initiated since January 1, 2010 with a VIN" (Ford.ca), and Acura Canada asks for "your 17-character Vehicle Information Number (VIN)" to "check safety recall and product update campaign status" (Acura.ca).
Cost. Free web lookups, one per maker. Cardog's recall pages link the lookup for the make you are reading.
3. CPIC stolen vehicle search
The RCMP "manages the CPIC website on behalf of the Canadian law enforcement community" (About). Its public search takes a VIN for "autos, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, farm vehicles, heavy equipment, trailers, or ATVs," and says that for a positive result, "please contact your local police to confirm the information and ask for assistance" (CPIC).
Cost. Free web search.
4. SGI Saskatchewan VIN search
SGI says "The Saskatchewan VIN search is free to use." It gives the vehicle's Saskatchewan status, its most recent Saskatchewan registration expiry date, its "damage claims history in Saskatchewan (since Nov. 1, 2002)," and whether the Saskatchewan PST is paid or owing (SGI).
Cost. Free web search.
Where to get the history record
A free VIN check answers what the car is. Its accident, lien and ownership record comes from the province or a report seller:
- Ontario. The Used Vehicle Information Package lists Ontario owners and odometer readings, lien information, and wrecked or unfit status, for $20 (ontario.ca).
- British Columbia. ICBC's vehicle claims history report covers damage claimed through ICBC, for $20.00 plus GST (ICBC).
- Alberta. The Vehicle Information Report shows Alberta status, odometer, registration history and the number of Alberta liens (Alberta).
- Quebec. The SAAQ's ownership history shows whether a vehicle "has been rebuilt," and how many people have owned it. "Fees apply" (SAAQ).
- UCDA. The Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario lists lien, Ontario ownership history and Auto Check accident searches, with Ontario lien searches "available only to Members" (UCDA).
- VinAudit Canada. A Canadian report by VIN covering title brands, registration, mileage, theft and recalls (VinAudit Canada).
- Carfax Canada. Its report records "can reveal critical information about a car's history such as damage incidents, open recalls, service history, registration status, and liens," and the report "is based only on information supplied by participating data sources" (Carfax Canada).
Province by province, with lien registries: How to check a used car's history in Canada.
Why Cardog is first
- One paste, four answers. The vehicle, the check digit, its recalls and its price, on one page.
- Canadian by default. Transport Canada recalls lead, and prices are Canadian asks in CAD.
- Free with no sign-up. Every VIN page opens without an account.
- The next step named. Each recall points to the maker's lookup to confirm the car.
FAQ
What is the best free VIN check in Canada? Cardog: it decodes the VIN to trim, tests the check digit, lists the recalls Transport Canada has for the model year and shows what comparable cars ask in Canada, free with no account.
Can I check if a car is stolen in Canada for free? Yes. Search the VIN on the CPIC website, which the RCMP manages, and contact your local police about any positive result.
Can I check recalls by VIN for free? Yes. Cardog lists the recalls for the VIN's model year, and the manufacturer's own lookup confirms whether that exact car has an open recall.
Does a free VIN check show accidents or liens? SGI's free Saskatchewan VIN search shows damage claims in that province. Elsewhere, accident and lien records come from the province's record, a lien registry or a history report.
Where do I find the VIN? On the dashboard at the lower-left corner of the windshield, on the driver's door jamb sticker, and on the registration and insurance card.
