Do you need a Carfax report?

Last updated:

When a used-car buyer in Canada needs a vehicle history report, and the free checks to run first: the VIN decode, recalls, the CPIC stolen search and the market price.

Start with the free checks. On cardog.app/vin, the VIN tells you what the car is down to trim, which recalls Transport Canada lists for its model year, and what comparable cars are asking in Canada. The police stolen vehicle search and the maker's recall lookup are free too. You need a history record when you want a used car's records after it left the factory: accidents, liens and ownership. Carfax Canada sells a report, and it is one source of several. Each province keeps part of the record, from Ontario's Used Vehicle Information Package to ICBC's claims report and SGI's free Saskatchewan VIN search. Run the free checks first, then decide whether the car is worth the record.

Written by Cardog, so read it with that in mind. Every claim about another organization links to its own public page, checked on 2026-10-27.

What a history report is for

A vehicle history report covers what happened to a car after it was built. Carfax Canada says the records in its report "can reveal critical information about a car's history such as damage incidents, open recalls, service history, registration status, and liens." It also says the report "is based only on information supplied by participating data sources," and recommends "taking a test drive and getting a vehicle inspection along with a vehicle history report when buying used" (Carfax Canada).

What a VIN does not hold

A VIN on its own does not hold any of this. Nothing that happens after manufacture is encoded in the 17 characters; see What a VIN tells you.

A sensible order

  1. Match the VIN. Read it on the dashboard and the driver's door jamb, and check it against the registration.
  2. Decode it on Cardog. Paste it into cardog.app/vin. If the year, make, model or trim do not match the ad, stop there.
  3. Read the recalls. Note any recalls listed for the model year, and confirm open ones with the maker's lookup.
  4. Search CPIC. For a positive result, CPIC says "please contact your local police to confirm the information and ask for assistance" (CPIC).
  5. Price it. Compare the asking price with the median and middle half on the VIN page.
  6. Then get the record. If the car still makes sense, get its accident, lien and ownership record from the province it was registered in, or buy a national report.
  7. Inspect and drive it. A mechanic's inspection checks the car itself.
