On certain vehicles, road de-icing salt used during winter months may result in corrosion of the lower plate or the front lower control arm. Corrosion may proceed to the point where the lower plate becomes perforated and the front lower control arm fractures between its forward and rearward pivot attachments to the chassis. If the front lower control arm fractures, the wheel assembly may be allowed to move rearward in the wheel well opening during braking. Reduced control of the front wheel location may increase the risk of a vehicle crash. Correction: Dealer will replace the front lower control arm.
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. DURING WINTER MONTHS, LARGE QUANTITIES OF SALT ARE USED TO DE-ICE ROADS. THIS ROAD SALT COULD RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS.
SEVERE CORROSION COULD RESULT IN PERFORATION AND POTENTIAL FRACTURE OF THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM. IF THIS FRACTURE OCCURS, THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY REMAINS CONNECTED TO THE CHASSIS THROUGH THE FORWARD LOWER CONTROL ARM PIVOT POINT AND THROUGH THE STRUT ATTACHMENT TO THE UPPER WHEELHOUSE. REDUCED CONTROL OF THE FRONT WHEEL LOCATION INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND, IF NECESSARY, WILL REPLACE ONE OR BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS IF STRUCTURAL DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN ON JUNE 10, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
On certain vehicles, corrosion from winter road salt may cause pits to form on the lower coil of the front springs. These pits may allow cracks to develop, which can result in the breakage of the lower spring coil. If the front coil spring breaks, it may become displaced from its seated position and cause damage to a tire which in turn could result in loss of vehicle control. Correction: A spring guide will be installed which will prevent a broken coil from contacting and damaging a tire.

IF THE FRONT COIL SPRING BREAKS, IT CAN BECOME DISPLACED FROM ITS SEATED POSITION, AND CAN CONTACT A TIRE. TIRE DAMAGE CAN RESULT.
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SPRING GUIDE TO PREVENT A BROKEN COIL SPRING FROM CONTACTING AND DAMAGING A TIRE.
THROUGH CONTACT WITH ROAD HAZARDS AND CURBS, THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY CAN SHIFT FROM ITS ORIGINAL POSITION.
THE SHIFTED LOCATION CAN RESULT IN IMPROPER WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND INCREASED STEERING EFFORT INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
DEALERS WILL REINFORCE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MEMBER ASSEMBLY ATTACHMENT TO THE UNDERBODY.
NOTE: ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES WERE REPAIRED PRIOR TO DELIVERY. THE LEFT REAR AXLE CARRIER ON THESE VEHICLES MAY CONTAIN A CASTING DEFECT WHICH COULD REDUCE THE INTEGRITY OF THIS PART. CORRECTION: VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND AXLE CARRIER REPLACED WHERE REQUIRED.
NOTE: STANDARD TRANSMISSION VEHICLES. WHEN PRESSING AND RELEASING THE CLUTCH PEDAL, A BRACKET ON THE CLUTCH PEDAL LEVER MAY CONTACT THE ENGINE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS AND CAUSE ABRASION OF THE WIRING INSULATION. IF THIS OCCURS, THE DAMAGED INSULATION MAY RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT TO THE ENGINE CONTROL WIRING WHICH COULD CAUSE UNEXPECTED ENGINE STALL. CORRECTION: ENGINE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS WILL BE INSPECTED FOR DAMAGE AND REPOSITIONED TO ENSURE THAT CONTACT WITH THE BRACKET DOES NOT OCCUR.
THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE WIRING HARNESS UNDER THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CAN BE CONTACTED BY THE CLUTCH PEDAL ASSEMBLY WHEN THE CLUTCH IS ENGAGED.
CONTACT ABRADES AND DAMAGES THE INSULATION ONTHE HARNESS CAUSING A FUSE TO BLOW AND THE ENGINE TO STALL. UNEXPECTED ENGINE STALLING INCREASES THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ENGINE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS TO DETERMINE IF IT HAS BEEN DAMAGED AND REPOSITION THE HARNESS SO THAT CONTACT WITH THE CLUTCH PEDAL LEVER WILL NOT OCCUR.
NOTE: AIRBAG EQUIPPED VEHICLES ONLY. A PLASTIC SLIDER PIECE WITHIN THE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH MAY NOT FULLY RETRACT WHEN THE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH IS MOVED FROM THE LOW BEAM TO THE HIGH BEAM POSITION. AS A RESULT THE LOW BEAM LAMPS ARE EXTIGUISHED AS INTENDED, BUT THE HIGH BEAM LAMPS ARE NOT ILLUMINATED. RETURNING THE SWITCH TO THE LOW BEAM POSITION WILL AGAIN ILLUMINATE THE LOW BEAMS. CORRECTION: TURN SIGNAL AND LIGHTING SWITCH ASSEMBLIES WERE REPLACED ON AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO FINAL SALE.
A PLASTIC SLIDER PIECE WITHIN THE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY DOES NOT FULLY RETRACT WHEN THE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH IS MOVED FROM LOW BEAM TO HIGH BEAM POSITION. THE LOW BEAM LAMPS GO OUT AS INTENDED, BUT THE HIGH BEAM LAMPS DO NOT COME ON.
THIS CONDITION WILL RESULT IN INADEQUATE LIGHTING CAUSING A VISIBILITY PROBLEM FOR THE DRIVER AND OTHER ONCOMING MOTORISTS AND AN ACCIDENT CAN OCCUR.
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY.
