Note: This recall replaces recall R0246 (Transport Canada recall number 2023-527). For the Sonata model, only the Sonata Hybrid model is affected by this recall. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the fuse for the ABS module. Issue: On certain vehicles, a part in the trunk release latch could fail. If this happens, the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk compartment may not work properly. This could prevent a person that is trapped inside the trunk from opening it. Note: For the 2016 model year Sonata, only the Sonata Hybrid is affected by this recall. Safety Risk: If a person is closed inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out. This could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the trunk latch assembly.
Issue: On certain 5-door cars, when the rear defroster is switched on, the rear glass may develop hot spots. Safety Risk: A person that comes in contact with hot spots on the rear glass could have an increased risk of a burn injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their car to a dealer to have the rear glass replaced.
Certain vehicles may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 - Occupant Protection in Frontal Impacts. The center rear seat belt is equipped with a release mechanism that allows both the lap and the shoulder portion of the seat belt to be detached at the lower anchorage point by using a key-like tool. As the rear center seat is non-folding, this is contrary to the requirements of the standard. Correction: A production change has been undertaken to remedy this non-compliance condition. No corrective recall action is required as the non-compliance condition is deemed to be non-safety related.
On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the switch with a new model.
On certain vehicles, The Occupant Detection System may have been incorrectly programmed. In cold ambient temperatures, the system may fail to deactivate the front passenger airbag when an child restraint seat occupies the front passenger seat and also illuminate the airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster. This could result in injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the SRS Occupant Detection System.

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. This could prevent proper brake lamp operation. Failure of the brake lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death. A malfunction of the switch may also cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. Additionally, a faulty switch may affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles so that the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of PARK position. It may also cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. Correction: Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch assembly.
