On certain vehicles, the splines of the steering coupling interlock could excessively wear due to insufficient tightening torque of the steering coupling. On certain vehicles, the Bowden cables between the inner door handles and door locks may be defective. If the vehicle is involved in a crash, the force required to open the door locks might be increased, causing the Bowden cables to break when using the inside handles to unlock the doors. If this occurs, it would be impossible to unlock and open the doors using the inside handles making it difficult for the occupants to exit the vehicle, which would increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the Bowden cables on all four doors.

In the affected vehicles, the cable that unlatches the door when the inner door handle is pulled may break if the door is difficult to release, such as could occur after a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."
