The answer

Half of the 254,699 used vehicles offered for sale in Canada between 11 July 2026 and 9 October 2026 asked less than $30,991. The book prices them one row at a time: make, model and model year, with the count of vehicles behind every row. 2,051 of 4,307 rows have at least 20 vehicles and are published, and they hold 95.2% of the vehicles. Every price is what a seller asked, not what a vehicle sold for.

Method

  1. The unit. One vehicle, by VIN. When several listings carry the same VIN, the one seen most recently in the window stands for it. 254,699 used vehicles, of 511,830 seen.
  2. The window. 90 days: 11 July 2026 to 9 October 2026. A vehicle is in the window if its listing was seen live in it. The run of record is 2026-10-09T03:27Z.
  3. The population. VIN decoded and verified. Price in Canadian dollars, between $2,000 and $500,000. Model years 2016 to 2026. Used: the seller says used, or the odometer reads 1,000 km or more.
  4. The grain. Make, model and model year, keyed on the decoder's canonical model reference, not the seller's spelling. Where two references share a name, the reference is shown in brackets. Trim is not a grain.
  5. The statistics. Median asking price (the published value), 25th and 75th percentile, median odometer, the count of vehicles and the count of distinct sellers.
  6. The floor. A row with fewer than 20 vehicles is not published. It is absent, never estimated. 2,051 of 4,307 rows clear it, holding 95.2% of the vehicles.
  7. Province. From the seller's address, resolved for 71% of vehicles. A provincial row is published where the province alone has 20 vehicles in it. The province index uses rows with 20 nationally and 10 in the province.
  8. The national median. Taken over every used vehicle, not over the rows.

Limits

  • It is not a sold price. Every value is what a seller asked. A vehicle can sell for less, or more. The record does not yet hold enough transaction prices to publish a sold or wholesale value honestly, so this edition does not publish one.
  • It is not the private market. The listings are dealer, aggregator and auction inventory. A private sale between neighbours is not in the book.
  • It is not one vehicle's value. A row is a model year across trims and conditions. The middle half shows how wide that is.
  • Province is the seller. A vehicle listed in Alberta counts for Alberta, wherever it ends up registered.
  • Coverage is observed, not claimed. A make with no used listing in the window has no row.
  • The book is a cross-section of the market in one 90-day window, not the path of one vehicle's price over time.

Sources

Data as of Run 9 October 2026, vehicles seen 11 July to 9 October 2026. Published October 28, 2026. Every price is what a seller asked, not what a vehicle sold for. Every figure is computed by one script from the edition's files.

  • Cardog listing record: dealer, aggregator and auction listings in Canada, read daily, each VIN decoded by Cardog's decoder. Private-party listings are effectively absent. Run of record 2026-10-09T03:27Z.

This edition

Supersedes
None. This is the first edition.
Superseded by
Not yet. The next edition is counted with the same method on a new 90-day window, so a change in a value is a change in the market, not in the method. Past editions stay as published.

This edition is sealed: it is not edited after publication. A later one supersedes it, and this one stays readable here.

Questions

What does the Value Book measure?
The median price sellers asked for used vehicles in Canada, by make, model, model year and province, in the 90 days to 9 October 2026. It counts 254,699 used vehicles.
Is it what a used vehicle sells for?
No. Every price is what a seller asked, for a vehicle in dealer inventory, on a dated day. It is not a sold price.
Why is a model missing?
A row needs 20 vehicles behind it. A row under 20 is left out, never estimated.
