THE HEATSHIELD ABOVE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS INADEQUATE UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES INVOLVING ENGINE MALFUNCTION. A MISFIRING ENGINE COULD OVERHEAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER CAUSING MATERIALS IN THE VICINITY OF THE CONVERTER, INCLUDING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES TO IGNITE RESULTING IN AN UNDERBODY FIRE. CORRECTION: 1) REPLACE THE HEATSHIEL WITH A LARGER IMPROVED HEATSHIELD. 2) INSTALL A HEAT RESISTANT SLEEVE ON ATF LINES WHERE NECESSARY. 3) REPLACE PLASTIC ATF LINE MOUNTING BRACKET IN PROXIMITY TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WITH A METAL MOUNTING BRACKET.
VEHICLES WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN ENGINE CARRIER WHICH HAS A FAULTY WELD TO THE SUPPORT BRACKET. IF THE WELD WERE TO GIVE WAY, A BREAK IN THE ENGINE CARRIER COULD DEVELOP, RESULTING IN A STEERING BLOCKAGE AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL.

MATERIALS NEAR CATALYTIC CONVERTER, INCLUDING LINES FORAUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID, COULD IGNITE AND CAUSE AN UNDERBODY FIRE.
REPLACE HEAT SHIELD FOR CATALYTIC CONVERTER WITH A LARGER, IMPROVED HEAT SHIELD.
THE ENGINE CARRIER HAS A FAULTY WELD TO THE SUPPORT BRACKET EYES. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: THE WELD COULD GIVE WAY AND THE BRACKET EYE SEPARATE FROM THE CARRIER. WITH HIGHER MILEAGE ACCUMULATION A BREAK IN THE ENGINE CARRIER COULD DEVELOP AND RESULT IN A STEERING BLOCKAGE, LOSS OF CONTROL WITH POSSIBLY AN ACCIDENT.
REPLACE THE ENGINE CARRIER AND THE CARRIER SUPPORT.
