CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRIC BRAKE SYSTEMS," AND NO. 135, "PASSENGER CAR BRAKE SYSTEMS." THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) MODULATOR VALVE COVER RETAINING BOLTS CAN CRACK DUE TO STRESSES TRANSMITTED BY THE FLEXING VALVE COVERS.
THIS CAN PRODUCE AN UNEXPECTED INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE, WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR TOTAL LOSS OF SERVICE BRAKING FUNCTION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
DEALERS WILL STRENGTHEN THE ABS MODULATOR ASSEMBLY VALVE COVERS AND REPLACE THE RETAINING BOLTS. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXEPCTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-800-637-6837.

These are Transport Canada campaigns for 2004 Land Rover Discovery vehicles sold in Canada. A Canadian campaign may have no US counterpart, or one under a different number covering different vehicles. For a vehicle sold in the United States, go by the NHTSA listing above and NHTSA's VIN lookup.
Certain vehicles may have received an incorrectly manufactured rear driveshaft coupling (part number TVF100010) as a replacement part during service. Drive coupling failure could allow the driveshaft to detach from the vehicle, resulting in a loss of propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road condition, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. As well, a driveshaft separating from the vehicle could strike another vehicle, stationary object, or bystander. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the driveshaft coupling.

On certain vehicles, the ABS Modulator valve cover retaining bolts can crack due to stresses transmitted by the flexing valve covers. This is a result of significant operation of traction or hill descent control, primarily associated with extensive off-road use. This defect can produce an unexpected increase in stopping distance, with the potential for total loss of service braking function, which would increase the likelihood of a crash. Correction: Dealer will strengthen the ABS Modulator assembly valve covers and replace the retaining bolts.

2004 Land Rover Discovery recall questions
NHTSA lists 2 recalls for the 2004 Land Rover Discovery model year. That counts campaigns naming this model year, not recalls on your vehicle: many cover only a VIN range or production window. Transport Canada lists 2 Canadian campaigns for the Canadian-market model, shown separately.
Enter your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup or Land Rover's own, or call a Land Rover dealer with your VIN. Cardog uses your VIN only to find the model year; the recalls shown here are listed for that model year and are not matched to your VIN.
Not necessarily. Transport Canada campaigns cover vehicles sold in Canada. For a vehicle sold in the United States, go by the NHTSA listing and NHTSA's VIN lookup.
Safety recall repairs are normally done at no charge by an authorized Land Rover dealer. The manufacturer's notice for each campaign sets out the remedy and any conditions, so confirm with the dealer when you book.
Once Land Rover's lookup or a dealer confirms a recall applies, book the repair with an authorized Land Rover dealer and bring your VIN. If the manufacturer's notice says not to drive the vehicle or to park it outside, follow that instruction. Parts can take time, so book early.
Follow the manufacturer's notice for that recall. Most allow normal driving until the repair; some tell owners to stop driving or to park outside until it is fixed. Cardog does not grade recalls by severity: the manufacturer's notice and your dealer are the source.
Manufacturers must notify owners they have on record. If you bought the vehicle used or have moved, update your details with Land Rover so notices reach you, and check NHTSA's lookup from time to time.
