Summary

On certain vehicles, the secondary clutch disengagement switch may have been omitted during vehicle assembly or, in some instances, removed during servicing. As such, primary switch failure would cause the automated manual transmission’s clutch to remain engaged when the brakes are applied. This could increase stopping distances, possibly resulting in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will install a micro-switch at the brake pedal and update the software to run a diagnostic on the switch during engine start-up.

Summary

On certain trucks equipped with super single tires, vibration frequency from the suspension may result in fatigue cracking of the mounting brackets for the brake cam tubes. In time the crack could propagate and cause of the brake cam tube support bracket(s) to fail, which could result in a loss of brakes at the corresponding wheel end. This could increase stopping distances, possibly causing a vehicle crash resulting in property damage, personal injuries or death. Correction: Dealers will install an additional support bracket to the brake cam tubes.

Summary

On certain trucks, the automatic circuit breakers used to protect the vehicle lighting system may not provide adequate protection. If a short circuit occurs, components and wiring may be subject to overheating, which could result in a vehicle fire, causing property damage and/or personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the circuit breakers with fuses.

Summary

On certain trucks, the fifth wheel hitch assembly's lever arm may have been incorrectly installed during the manufacturing process. The lever arm pivot bolt may have been over-tightened which could distort the pivot bolt spacer sleeve and prevent the fifth wheel latch jaw from closing and latching securely around the trailer king pin. This could allow the towed unit to separate from the towing vehicle while underway, potentially causing a crash with injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the pivot bolt and sleeve with a hex head shoulder bolt and washer.

Summary

On certain trucks, when the ignition key is in the 'ON' position, the pre-heater, located in the fuel filter base, is energized. If this pre-heater is energized while maintenance is being performed on the fuel filter, diesel fuel could ignite within the filter housing. A fire within the fuel filter housing may spread possibly resulting in property damage or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the fuel heater assembly.

Summary

On certain trucks, the locknut used to retain the steering shaft may not have had the lock feature. As a result, the nut could loosen, allowing the steering shaft to separate, causing a loss of steering control which could result in a vehicle crash with injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the steering shaft pinch bolt and locknut.

Summary

On certain trucks, the axle housing may have been manufactured with steel that was out of specification (9.5mm thick instead of 11mm thick), which could result in a fatigue failure over time. If failure occurs, the axle may lock-up or the end of the axle could come off, which may result in a vehicle crash with injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the axles.

Summary

On certain trucks, an improperly seated or missing u-joint snap ring can result in the bearing cup to separate from the slip yoke sub-assembly. The u-joint could then contact the slip yoke casting and eventually cause the ear to fracture. This could result in additional damage to the driveline, the vehicle and any nearby objects. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the driveshafts.

Summary

Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain model year 2007-2014 VAH, VHD, VNL, VNM, and VT models. The affected vehicles were built without a redundant clutch disengagement switch. Without a redundant switch, a loss of signal from the brake air pressure switch can prevent the clutch from automatically disengaging when the brake is applied.

Campaign ID:99757
Component:POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

Potential Consequence

Without a signal to disengage the clutch when the brakes are applied, the distance required to stop the truck may lengthen, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Volvo Trucks will notify owners and dealers will inspect and repair the vehicles if necessary. The recall began on August 26, 2013. Volvo's recall number is RVXX1303. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-336-393-2000.
