DUE TO THE SPECIFIC ATTACHMENT OF THE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE BRACKET AT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL COVER, THERE IS A RISK OF GRADUAL LOSS OF TRANSMISSION OIL WHICH MAY LEAD TO TRANSMISSION LOCK UP UNLESS THE TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL IS CHECKED FREQUENTLY.

EXCEPT TURBO MODELS. IN CERTAIN EXTREME WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS,THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF ICE BUILD UP IN THE THROTTLE HOUSING. THIS MAY IMPEDE FULL CLOSURE OF THE THROTTLE PLATE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS RELEASED

United States records (NHTSA) · 5
These are NHTSA campaigns for 1978 Saab 99 vehicles sold in the United States. They are not Canadian recalls: NHTSA's VIN lookup has no Canadian data, and a US campaign may have no Canadian counterpart, or one under a different number covering different vehicles. For a vehicle sold in Canada, go by the Transport Canada listing above and Saab's Canadian VIN lookup.
A PROBLEM RELATING TO THE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE BRACKET ATTACHMENT COULD CAUSE LEAKING OF TRANSMISSION OIL. TRANSMISSION COULD LOCK UP DUE TO LACK OF PROPER OIL LUBRICATION.
DEALER WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING EXHAUST PIPE BRACKET WITH ONE THAT ATTACHES TO THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL COVER GASKET WILL ALSO BE REPLACED, USING SCREWS INSTEAD OF STUDS.

UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS SUCH AS AMBIENT HUMIDITY AND VEHICLE PRE-CONDITIONING BY REPEATED COLD START, AND SHORT TRIP DRIVING CYCLES IN COMBINATION WITH SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES, THERE EXISTS THE POSSIBILITY FOR ICE TO FORM IN THE THROTTLE HOUSING AND TEMPORARILY IMPEDE FULL CLOSURE OF THE THROTTLE PLATE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS RELEASED. THIS ICE BUILD-UP IN THE THROTTLE HOUSING MAY CAUSE HESITATION IN VEHICLE DECELERATION AND INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES.
THE DEALER WILL MODIFY THE ENGINE INTAKE SYSTEM TO FURTHER IMPROVE PREHEATING OF INCOMING AIR IN COLD WEATHER. THIS WILL BE DONE FREE OF CHARGE.

INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE MAY EXIST BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK VENT TUBE AND VEHICLE FLOORPAN WHERE THE TUBE PROJECTS THROUGH AN ACCESS HOLE INTO THE TOOL COMPARTMENT UNDER THE TRUNK FLOOR. SHOULD THE TUBE CONTACT THE LOWER EDGE OF THIS OPENING, IT COULD BECOME DAMAGED AND FAIL AT THE POINT WHERE IT IS SOLDERED TO THE FUEL TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE COULD RESULT, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE TANK IS NEARLY OR COMPLETELY FULL.
DEALER WILL ENLARGE THE ACCESS HOLE IN THE FLOORPAN TO ENSURE PROPER CLEARANCE. IF THE VENT TUBE IS DAMAGED, IT WILL BE REPAIRED.

INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE AIR/FUEL MIXING REGULATOR AND THE THROTTLE HOUSING COULD ALLOW THE DECEL SOLENOID LINK ARM ON THE THROTTLE TO CONTACT THE MIXING REGULATOR UNDER CERTAIN EXTREME DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO ROCK TO THE LEFT ON ITS MOUNTING. FULLY DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR WHILE MAKING A SHARP RIGHT TURN AT MODERATE TO HIGH SPEEDS COULD CAUSE SUCH A CONTACT TO OCCUR. FURTHERMORE, MOVEMENT OF THE THROTTLE PLATE MAY MOMENTARILY BE RESTRICTED DURING THE TIME OF CONTACT BETWEEN THE LINK ARM AND MIXING REGULATOR.
THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE LINK ARM WITH A MODIFIED ONE TO ENSURE SUFFICIENT CLEARANCE TO THE MIXING REGULATOR UNDER ALL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE POSITION OF THE DECEL SOLENOID MAY ALSO BE READJUSTED IF FOUND NECESSARY.

THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE WEBBING NEAR THE METAL TONGUE OF THE LEFT HALF OF THE CENTER REAR SEAT BELT MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY SEWN TOGETHER.

1978 Saab 99 recall questions
Transport Canada lists 2 recalls for the 1978 Saab 99 model year. That counts campaigns naming this model year, not recalls on your vehicle: many cover only a VIN range or production window, and some only vehicles found on inspection. NHTSA lists 5 United States campaigns for the US-market model, shown separately; a US campaign may have no Canadian equivalent.
Enter your VIN in Saab's Canadian recall lookup, or call a Saab dealer with your VIN. In Canada the manufacturer is responsible for showing recall and repair status for each VIN, so its lookup is the authoritative answer. Cardog uses your VIN only to find the model year; the recalls shown here are listed for that model year and are not matched to your VIN.
Not necessarily. NHTSA campaigns cover vehicles sold in the United States, and NHTSA's VIN lookup has no Canadian data. When a defect also affects Canadian vehicles, the manufacturer files a separate notice with Transport Canada, often under a different number and sometimes covering a different set of vehicles. For a Canadian vehicle, go by the Transport Canada listing and Saab's Canadian lookup.
Safety recall repairs are normally done at no charge by an authorized Saab dealer. The manufacturer's notice for each campaign sets out the remedy and any conditions, so confirm with the dealer when you book.
Once Saab's lookup or a dealer confirms a recall applies, book the repair with an authorized Saab dealer and bring your VIN. If the manufacturer's notice says not to drive the vehicle or to park it outside, follow that instruction. Parts can take time, so book early.
Follow the manufacturer's notice for that recall. Most allow normal driving until the repair; some tell owners to stop driving or to park outside until it is fixed. Cardog does not grade recalls by severity: the manufacturer's notice and your dealer are the source.
Manufacturers must notify owners they have on record. If you bought the vehicle used or have moved, update your details with Saab Canada so notices reach you, and check the manufacturer's lookup from time to time.
