Issue: On certain vehicles, the fuel pump could fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power while driving could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump.
Issue: On certain vehicles, a software error in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) could cause the valve clearance adjuster not to work properly. This could result in internal engine damage. If this happens, the engine may misfire and lose power. In the worst case, the engine may stall while driving without the ability to restart it. The malfunction indicator light (MIL) may also turn on in the instrument cluster. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the PCM software.
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2018 Mazda3, Mazda6, 2019 CX-3, 2018-2019 MX-5, CX-5, CX-9, and 2019-2020 Mazda2 vehicles. The impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump may crack and deform, potentially causing the fuel pump to fail.
Fuel pump failure may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the fuel pumps, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 5321K.
