SEDANS AND WAGONS LOCATED IN ONTARIO, QUEBEC, NEW BRUNSWICK, NOVA SCOTIA, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND AND NEWFOUNDLAND. SALT INDUCED CORROSION OF THE STEERING IDLER ARM PIN MAY GRADUALLY DEVELOP HARD OR STIFF STEERING OPERATION OR POOR STEERING RETURN. RESULTING PROGRESSIVELY HARDER STEERING EFFORT COULD ULTIMATELY CAUSE THE DISINTIGRATION OF THE IDLER ARM PIN. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND POSSIBLE VEHICLE CRASH.
1978-82 GLC HATACHBACKS; 1979-83 GLC STATION WAGONS; 1981-82 GLC SEDANS AND 1979-82 626 HARDTOPS. ON MODELS EQUIPPED WITH THE LONG SASH QUIDE ANCHORING THE UPPER TORSO PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT, THE UPPER ANCHORAGE BOLT MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY RE-INSTALLED AFTER VEHICLE REPAIR. DURING VEHICLE USE AN IMPROPERLY RE-INSTALLED BOLT MAY LOOSEN AND EVENTUALLY PULL OUT.
EGR VALVE MOUNTING BOLT MAY BE IMPROPERLY TIGHTENED ALLOWING AIR TO BE SUCKED INTO THE EGR SYSTEM. THIS MAY CAUSE THE NITROGEN OXIDES LEVEL TO EXCEED C.M.V.S.S.1103-EXHAUST EMISSIONS.
IN CERTAIN HIGH SALT AREAS, THE IDLER ARM IS EXPOSED TO ROAD SALT WHICH CAUSES THE DUST SEAL TO DETERIORATE RESULTING IN IDLER ARM PIN CORROSION. THIS CAUSES THE PIN TO FREEZE AND BREAK. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: A BROKEN IDLER ARM PIN COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.
REPLACE PIN WITH ONE OF IMPROVED CORROSION RESISTANT QUALITY.
ANCHORAGE BOLT MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY REINSTALLED AFTER VEHICLE REPAIR. THE BOLT COULD LOOSEN DURING NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION.
UPON INSPECTION, ALL IMPROPERLY INSTALLED BOLTS WILL BE REMOVED AND REINSTALLED CORRECTLY.
