Note: 1996-99 crown victoria police, fleet and ngv and lincoln town car limousine equipped with a lower control arm ball joint containing a one piece bearing and 1990-96 crown victoria police, fleet and ngv and lincoln town car limousine that were serviced with either a ball joint containing an one piece bearing or a front lower control arm with a one piece bearing. High bearing loads can lead to thinning and eventual cracking of the lower control arm ball joint. This can result in separation of the ball and cap of the joint. Should this occur, the control arm to which the cap is mounted will drop to the ground. Should this occur while the vehicle is moving, reduced steering control could result in a collision. Correction: Lower control arm ball joints will be replaced.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN 1996-1999 FORD CROWN VICTORIA POLICE, FLEET, NATURAL GAS, AND 1996-1999 LINCOLN TOWN CAR LIMOUSINE VEHICLES THAT WERE PRODUCED WITH A LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT CONTAINING A ONE PIECE BEARING; AND 1990-1996 FORD CROWN VICTORIA POLICE, FLEET, AND NGV VEHICLES AND 1990-1996 LINCOLN TOWN CAR LIMOUSINE VEHICLES THAT HAVE BEEN SERVICED WITH EITHER A BALL JOINT CONTAINING THE ONE-PIECE BEARING OR A FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM CONTAINING A BALL JOINT WITH A ONE-PIECE BEARING. THE ONE-PIECE BEARING WITHIN THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT CAN WEAKEN SLOWLY DURING USE AND EVENTUALLY CRACK. THIS COULD RESULT IN SEPARATION OF THE BALL AND CAP OF THE JOINT, ALLOWING THE CONTROL ARM TO DROP TO THE GROUND.
IF THIS OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, REDUCED STEERING CONTROL COULD OCCUR, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINTS (2).
DEFECT: UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS THE SECONDARY LATCH MAY WEDGE AGAINST THE STRIKER, RESTRICTING THE DOWNWARD MOTION OF THE HOOD, WHICH MAY SUBSEQUENTLY RESULT IN THE POTENTIAL FOR INCOMPLETE PRIMARY LATCH ENGAGEMENT. THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED OPENING OF THE HOOD WHICH COULD OBSTRUCT THE DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD AND POTENTIALLY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. CORRECTION: THE HOOD LATCH ASSEMBLY WILL BE REPLACED.
THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH MAY NOT ENGAGE WHEN THE HOOD IS CLOSED.
IN THE EVENT THE PRIMARY HOOD LATCH RELEASES OR IS NOT PROPERLY LATCHED WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, THE HOOD COULD FLY UP OBSTRUCTING THE OPERATOR'S VISION, AND INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HOOD LATCH ASSEMBLY.
CORROSION OF THE HOOD LATCH STRIKER PLATE CAUSES DETACHMENT OF THE PLATE FROM THE HOOD ASSEMBLY RESULTING IN AN UNEXPECTED OPENING OF THE HOOD WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN.
THIS CONDITION CAN REDUCE THE DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD INCREASING THE POTENTIAL OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW HOOD INNER PANEL REINFORCEMENT AND A NEW, GALVANIZED HOOD LATCH STRIKER PLATE.
THE HOOD LATCH STRIKER PLATE MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE HOOD ASSEMBLY RESULTING IN AN INADVERTENT OPENING OF THE HOOD WHILE DRIVING. THIS COULD REDUCE THE DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD AND POTENTIALLY RESULT IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT. CORRECTION: A NEW HOOD INNER PANEL REINFORCEMENT AND A NEW, GALVANIZED, HOOD LATCH STRIKER PLATE WILL BE INSTALLED ON AFFECTED VEHICLES.
THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH MAY NOT FULLY ENGAGE WHEN THE HOOD IS CLOSED. IN THE EVENT THE PRIMARY LATCH RELEASES WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, A PARTIALLY ENGAGED SECONDARY LATCH MIGHT NOT RESTRAIN THE HOOD AND HOOD FLY-UP COULD OCCUR. THIS COULD RESULT IN OBSTRUCTED DRIVER VISIBILITY AND A POSSIBLE CRASH. CORRECTION: HOOD LATCH WILL BE REPLACED WITH ONE OF A REVISED DESIGN.

THE FUEL LINES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT MAY HAVE BEEN DISTORTED DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY AND MAY CONTACT THE STEERING COLUMN UNIVERSAL JOINT. THIS COULD WEAR AWAY THE WALL OF THE FUEL LINE RESULTING IN FUEL LEAKAGE AND, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FIRE COULD RESULT. CORRECTION: FUEL LINES WILL BE INSPECTED AND REPOSITIONED, REPAIRED OR REPLACED AS NECESSARY.
DISTORTED FUEL LINES IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT MAY CONTACT THE STEERING COLUMN UNIVERSAL JOINT AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FUEL LINE.
FUEL LEAKAGE COULD OCCUR FROM THE DAMAGED FLUID LINE AND,IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
REPOSITION FUEL LINE TO PREVENT CONTACT WITH UNIVERSAL JOINT; IF FUEL LINES ARE ALREADY DAMAGED, REPAIR OR REPLACE FUEL LINES.
