Certain vehicles may develop increased electrical resistance in the intermediate connector for the seat-mounted side airbags. As a result, the airbags may not function as intended, causing the instrument panel warning lamp to illuminate. Failure of the side airbags to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will change the mounting location of both side airbag intermediate connectors and add epoxy to prevent movement inside the connectors.
Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of CMVSS 108 pertaining to stop lamps and reflex reflectors. Correction: Dealers will install updated rear combination lamp assemblies.
On certain vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor may have an improper solder joint. This could cause the Service Engine Soon warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation. Correction: Dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor and both camshaft position sensors.
On certain vehicles equipped with 17 inch alloy wheels, these wheels may have a casting defect(s) from which a crack(s) may propagate as the vehicle is being driven. If a sufficient number of cracks develop, the wheel could fail and separate from the mounting hub. Correction: Dealer will replace wheels.
On certain vehicles one of the diodes used in the alternator may have been damaged when built. This can eventually result in failure of the diode and an electrical short, which could melt the plastic housing. If the combustible gas emitted by the melting plastic does not disperse due to air flow through the engine compartment, it could ignite and in turn ignite the fan guide in the alternator. Correction: dealers will replace the alternator.
Duplicate recall, see original 1998174. Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements of CMVSS 114 - Locking System. There is the possibility that the ignition key can be removed at times when the engine is turned off without placing the transmission shift lever in the "Park" position. If this were to occur, and the driver failed to move the shift lever to "Park" after removing the key and failed to engage the parking brake before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle could roll away. Correction: Shift lock control unit will be replaced.
On certain vehicles, elecrtolyte leakage and high humidity conditions could cause a short circuit in the rear speaker integrated amplifier. This condition could result in overheating, and a possible speaker fire. Correction: The circuit board in the rear speaker amplifier will be replaced with a new one that has an anti-humidity coating.
THE SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT MAY NOT SEND A LOCK SIGNAL TO THE KEY INTERLOCK MECHANISM SOLENOID. THIS WOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY AFTER TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND NOT PLACING THE SHIFT LEVER IN THE "PARK" POSITION. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR AND THE DRIVER FAILED TO MOVE THE SHIFT LEVER TO THE "PARK" POSITION OR TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE BEFORE EXITING THE VEHICLE WHILE PARKED ON A SLOPE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY. CORRECTION: SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT WILL BE REPLACED.
