Summary

Certain vehicles (not involved in recall 98-150), may experience a windshield wiper failure due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. If this were to occur in a severe weather situation, driver's visibility could be reduced, which could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning. Correction: Dealer will replace defective wiper motor until 7 years or 112 000 km from date vehicle was originally placed into service or for those vehicles currently outside of this coverage, until March 31 2004.

Summary

On certain vehicles, the following statements were omitted from the SIR caution label: "Never put a rear-facing child seat in the front" for the vehicles without an air bag switch or "Never put a rear-facing child seat in the front unless air bag is off" for vehicles with an air bag switch and "Sit far back as possible from the air bag". The statements are printed in the Owner's Manual. Correction: None required as instructions are in the owners manual and this is well known by the public.

Summary

On certain vehicles, a short in the electric outside rearview mirror switch could develop. If this were to occur, it could result in an inoperative switch, heat damage to the driver's door, and/or ignition of components in the driver's door and a subsequent vehicle fire without prior warning. Correction: Dealer will install a fused jumper harness to the electric outside rearview mirror switch.

Summary

Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements of C.M.V.S.S. 105 - Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems. Vehicles may have a kinked brake booster vacuum supply hose which could increase stopping distances in multiple brake applications. Correction: Brake vacuum booster supply hose will be rerouted.

Summary

Certain vehicles may not comply with CMVSS 124 - Accelerator Control Systems. Vehicles may have been assembled with the throttle cable contacting the dash mat. The dash mat may bind the throttle cable such that the throttle return time may not meet the requirements of the standard. Correction: Dealers will inspect for adequate throttle cable to dash mat clearance, and if there is insufficient clearance, a portion of the dash mat will be cut out to provide clearance.

Summary

On certain vehicles, the service-part fuel tanks may have one or more pairs of the six projection welds which attach the sender-unit ring to the tank that do not meet specification. These out of specification welds may fracture during sender unit installation resulting in fuel leakage and a possible vehicle fire. Note: recall covers 1975-1986 chevrolet/gmc c/k pickup and chassis cab trucks and 1987-1991 chevrolet/gmc r/v pickup and chassis cab trucks. Correction: vehicles with fractured sender ring weld pairs will have a new fuel tank installed.

Summary

ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH BUCKET SEATS WITH KNOB TYPE RECLINER MECHANISMS, A FRONT SEAT RECLINER BOLT MAY FATIGUE AND BREAK. THIS MAY ALLOW THE SEAT BACK TO SUDDENLY RECLINE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO SUDDEN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. CORRECTION: RECLINER BOLTS WILL BE REPLACED ON AFFECTED VEHICLES.

VEHICLES MAY DEVELOP AN ABNORMAL PRESSURE BUILD-UP IN THE TRANSMISSION WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF TRANSMISSION FLUID COMING OUT OF THE FILLER TUBE ONTO HOT ENGINE PARTS RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE VEHICLE FIRE. CORRECTION: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A NEW DIPSTICK WITH A LOCK-SEAL TOP, NEW OWNER MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS, GRAPHICS FOR CHECKING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL AND UPDATED INFORMATION ON TOWING WITH AN OVERDRIVE EQUIPPED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

Summary

On certain K1500, Astro, Safari and Suburban vehicles, corrosion of the composite front brake rotors could cause separation of the stamped steel centre section from the cast outer rotor resulting in complete loss of braking capability for the affected wheel and a partial loss of front braking. This would increase stopping distances and could result in a crash without prior warning. Correction: Dealers will replace both front brake rotors with rotors having a corrosion protective coating.
