On certain vehicles operated in areas of high salt use, the spare tire hoist cable may corrode and eventually break. This would allow the spare tire to fall off the vehicle possibly resulting in a road hazard for other vehicles. Correction: A letter will be sent to owners of affected vehicles with maintenance and inspection instructions for spare tire hoist cable assemblies. Additionally, the letter will advise the owner that, if the cable breaks during that inspection, their dealer will repair the assembly. This policy will be in effect until December 31, 2002.

On certain vehicles, the transmission fluid may be forced out of the vent tube due to heat generation in the transmission caused by trailering heavy loads at high speeds or high-load/off road use. If the vented transmission fluid comes in contact with the catalytic converter, the fluid could ignite resulting in a vehicle fire. Correction: Dealers will install a longer transmission vent hose routed to the left side of the vehicle.

These are NHTSA campaigns for 1989 Chevrolet C Series vehicles sold in the United States. They are not Canadian recalls: NHTSA's VIN lookup has no Canadian data, and a US campaign may have no Canadian counterpart, or one under a different number covering different vehicles.
