Mitsubishi Mirage Recalls

Summary

Issue: This service campaign is for certain replacement rear brake drums that were sold by Mitsubishi dealers. The brake drums may have been made with wheel stud holes that are too large. As a result, a wheel stud could spin when tightening the wheel nut. This can reduce the clamping force between the wheel and the brake drum. If this happens, the wheel may eventually come loose and could separate from the vehicle. Note: This service campaign is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: A wheel that cannot be properly tightened could increase the risk of a wheel separation. This could increase the risk of a crash. A wheel that separates could also hit another person or vehicle. Corrective Actions: Mitsubishi will contact owners that may have had these brake drums replaced at a Mitsubishi dealer. They will advise affected owners to take their vehicle to a dealer, who will replace any affected brake drum(s).

Summary

Issue: On certain Mirage G4 sedans, the airbag control module may interpret vibrations caused by severe road conditions and/or driving on a flat tire as being a system fault. This could cause the airbag system to turn off. If this happens, the airbag warning light (SRS warning) would turn on and none of the vehicles' airbags would deploy in a crash. Safety Risk: Airbags that do not work in a crash could create an increased risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealership to update the airbag control unit software.

Summary

On certain vehicles, the internal self-diagnostic of the airbag control module may interpret vibrations caused by severe road conditions and/or driving on a flat tire as being a system fault. This would disable the airbag system. As a result, the airbags would not deploy in a crash that warrants their deployment, which would increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will update vehicle software.

Summary

On certain vehicles, the wiring harness connector located in the area of the drivers footrest could corrode due to exposure to melted snow/water containing road salt. This could result in illumination of several warning lamps including the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning lamp. If the SRS warning lamp is illuminated and the vehicle is subsequently involved in a collision that warrants frontal air bag deployment, the timing of the frontal airbag deployment(s) may be delayed, which would increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant(s). Correction: Dealers will relocate the wiring connector to a higher position. The connector will also be inspected and, if any corrosion is found, the connector will be replaced with a new one. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2015-579. Vehicles repaired as part of the previous recall will require re-inspection and repair.

Summary

Certain vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. Vehicles may have been assembled with headlamps that allow for horizontal adjustment, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard. This could reduce vehicle visibility, or could adversely affect the vision of oncoming drivers during low light and night time conditions, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the headlamps and, if necessary, secure the horizontal adjustment locking clips to comply with the standard.

Summary

On certain vehicles, the wiring harness connector located in the area of the drivers footrest could corrode over time due to repeated exposure to melted snow/water containing road salt. This could eventually result in illumination of several warning lamps including the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning lamp. If the SRS warning lamp is illuminated and the vehicle is subsequently involved in a collision that warrants frontal air bag deployment, the timing of the frontal airbag deployment(s) may be delayed, which would increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant(s). Correction: Dealers will install a waterproof sheet to prevent potential contamination and corrosion of the connector. The connector will also be inspected and, if any corrosion is found, the connector will be replaced with a new one.

Summary

On certain vehicles, due to improper manufacturing, the electrical resistance inside the impact sensor for the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) air bag system may have increased. As a result, abnormal communication may be detected by the ECU causing the SRS warning lamp to illuminate. If a vehicle is involved in a collision that warrants front, side, and/or curtain air bag deployment when the SRS warning lamp is illuminated, frontal air bag deployment could be delayed and/or the side and curtain air bag may not deploy. Failure of an airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the SRS impact sensor with a countermeasure unit.
