NAVISTAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2003 THROUGH 2010 INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS AND IC COMMERCIAL BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 4, 2001 THROUGH DECEMBER 14, 2009 EQUIPPED WITH INTERNATIONAL VT365 ENGINES HAVING ENGINE CALIBRATION PAN2PVR0, PAN2PVR1, OR PAN2PWR. THE ENGINE NORMALLY RESPONDS TO A FAILED OPEN ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT FAULT BY RETURNING THE ENGINE TO LOW IDLE SPEED OF 800 RPM AND DISABLING THE DRIVER'S ABILITY TO INCREASE THE ENGINE SPEED. HOWEVER IF THE OPEN CIRCUIT CORRECTS ITSELF WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF INITIATION, ENGINE SPEED COULD SUDDENLY INCREASE TO A HIGH IDLE SPEED OF 1200 RPM.
THIS INCREASE TO HIGH IDLE SPEED MAY OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING A SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED SHIFT IN VEHICLE POSITION POSSIBLY RESULTING IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY, OR DEATH.
NAVISTAR WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 1, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NAVISTAR AT 1-800-448-7825.

These are Transport Canada campaigns for 2004 International 4200 vehicles sold in Canada. A Canadian campaign may have no US counterpart, or one under a different number covering different vehicles. For a vehicle sold in the United States, go by the NHTSA listing above and NHTSA's VIN lookup.
On certain vehicles equipped with an INTERNATIONAL® VT365 engine, the engine calibration normally responds to a failed open accelerator position sensor circuit fault by returning the engine to low idle speed of 800 rpm and disabling the driver's ability to increase the engine speed. However, If the open circuit condition corrects itself within 30 seconds of its initiation the engine calibration misinterprets this event by going into a "limp home mode" where the engine speed is increased from low idle speed to the high idle speed of 1200 rpm. This increase to high idle speed may occur without warning causing a sudden and unexpected shift in vehicle position possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install an updated engine calibration.

On certain vehicles equipped with an IROS air suspension system, four fasteners that connect the main support members to the hanger bracket of the rear suspension may not have been torqued properly during assembly. With less than the specified clamp load, the bolts could fatigue and fail. A failure of these bolts could result in separation of the main support from the hanger bracket resulting in a sudden loss of control of the vehicle. This could cause a vehicle crash without warning, possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace all four bolts.

On certain vehicles, the left turn signal light and the indicator lights on the instrument panel may not illuminate during hazard operation. An incorrectly manufactured switch contact causes intermittent contact in the turn signal stalk assembly. This results in intermittent left turn signal and indicator light operation when the hazard switch is activated. Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions. This could cause a vehicle crash without warning that may result in property damage, personal injury, or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the turn signal stalk assembly.

On certain vehicles, the parking brake assembly backing plate was incorrectly machined. This may cause the park brake to not fully engage. If the park brake does not engage, it may not fully release. Correction: Dealers will inspect to determine if park brake assembly replacement is required.

2004 International 4200 recall questions
NHTSA lists 2 recalls for the 2004 International 4200 model year. That counts campaigns naming this model year, not recalls on your vehicle: many cover only a VIN range or production window. Transport Canada lists 5 Canadian campaigns for the Canadian-market model, shown separately.
Enter your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup or International's own, or call a International dealer with your VIN. Cardog uses your VIN only to find the model year; the recalls shown here are listed for that model year and are not matched to your VIN.
Not necessarily. Transport Canada campaigns cover vehicles sold in Canada. For a vehicle sold in the United States, go by the NHTSA listing and NHTSA's VIN lookup.
Safety recall repairs are normally done at no charge by an authorized International dealer. The manufacturer's notice for each campaign sets out the remedy and any conditions, so confirm with the dealer when you book.
Once International's lookup or a dealer confirms a recall applies, book the repair with an authorized International dealer and bring your VIN. If the manufacturer's notice says not to drive the vehicle or to park it outside, follow that instruction. Parts can take time, so book early.
Follow the manufacturer's notice for that recall. Most allow normal driving until the repair; some tell owners to stop driving or to park outside until it is fixed. Cardog does not grade recalls by severity: the manufacturer's notice and your dealer are the source.
Manufacturers must notify owners they have on record. If you bought the vehicle used or have moved, update your details with International so notices reach you, and check NHTSA's lookup from time to time.
